“Not all readers are leaders, but all leaders are readers,” Harry Truman once said.

In an age of 280-character missives and endless news feeds, books are a sanctuary — offering nuance, depth, and greater understanding.

As we navigate the dizzying and discombobulating world of digital assets, we need to figure out what makes us tick, discover how others found success, and appreciate the storied history behind cryptocurrencies.

Cutting out the noise and seeking context gives us a chance to learn valuable life lessons through the eyes of others — and understand the “why.” Here are five essential books that can help you do this, and why the wisdom within their pages can make you a better trader.

  1. The Age of Cryptocurrency: How Bitcoin and the Blockchain Are Challenging the Global Economic Order

By Paul Vigna and Michael J. Casey

It’s easy to lose sight of why Bitcoin exists and drown in the hype surrounding cryptocurrencies. This book focuses on the ideology of crypto, its technological underpinnings, and how it fits into the history of money. The clear-eyed approach taken by these two journalists sets out the merits and drawbacks of digital assets — and fundamentally shows how they can change the world for the better.

  1. Bitcoin Billionaires: A True Story of Genius, Betrayal and Redemption

By Ben Mezrich

Back in 2009, Mezrich wrote The Accidental Billionaires — a warts-and-all retelling of how Facebook was founded. His follow-up book focuses on Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss, and chapters their lives following on from their legal showdown with Mark Zuckerberg. It tells the story of how they became the world’s very first Bitcoin billionaires — giving us an insight into how they discovered crypto, and the plays they made to achieve success. (Bitcoin Billionaires is now being made into a film.)

  1. Bitcoin & Black America

By Isaiah Jackson

A second edition of Jackson’s book was recently released, and powerfully explains how Bitcoin offers the Black community a powerful alternative to the dollar. He sets out how crypto can be incorporated into Black businesses, jobs and educational institutions — offering “separation from the racist banking system.”

  1. The Crypto Trader: How Anyone Can Make Money Trading Bitcoin and Other Cryptocurrencies

By Glen Goodman

On the face of it, the title of Goodman’s book makes it seem like you’re in for a “get rich quick” scheme — but this is a considered work that’s full of substance. The former journalist, who serves as a contributing expert on cryptocurrency at the London School of Economics, distills complex themes in a compelling way, talking about common mistakes to avoid and delving into the techniques used by professionals.

  1. Out of the Ether: The Amazing Story of Ethereum and the $55 Million Heist That Almost Destroyed It All

By Matthew Leising

Reflecting on the past gives us valuable lessons for the future — and Leising’s book on the daring DAO attack of June 2016 powerfully illustrates how the hack shook the Ethereum project to its very core. In doing so, this thrilling read casts a spotlight on some of the key principles at the heart of crypto — anonymity, decentralization and privacy among them.
